The Brahmin Boston

The Scene – Open since the end of 2011, The Brahmin has become one of Boston’s premier night spots. It is located in a neighborhood that is the edge of the South End and the Back Bay, hidden a bit back down a little side street. There is an attractive, slightly older and more sophisticated crowd that inhabits The Brahmin. As far as look and feel go, the interior has a classy, understated and stately decor. Not traditional to the flashiness of a nightclub and maybe that’s what separates The Brahmin from its competition and making it so consistently good. Dark hardwood, chandeliers and classic old school paintings that adorn the exposed brick are themes throughout. It is a rather large space overall with two floors and three bars. The main, ground level floor has one main room with a large bar in the middle and seating along the left wall. The small room to the right is usually just reserved as a dance floor but has some tables in it. When you get to the bottom of the stairs to the lower floor, to the right is the bathrooms and coat check. Beyond the coat check is another bar and L-shaped room that tends to usually not be as full and is usually much easier to get a drink at. The term Brahmin refers to a scholar class in the caste system in India. According to Vedic scriptures, a person with deep knowledge, fine intellect, high character and simple lifestyle was considered a Brahmin. In the US, it has been applied to the old, wealthy New England families of British Protestant origin that were influential in the development and leadership of science, arts, culture, politics, trade, and academia. I think the name fits the venue well.
